‘Trick or Treating’ at Halloween seems to have originated in Europe in the Middle ages. The late medieval practice of ‘Souling’ actually occurred on Hallowmas (November 1st), it involved the ‘poor folk’ going door to door begging for food. In exchange for food given the poor would pray for the dead on ‘All Souls day’.
