Day 20 – The name’s Claus, Santa Claus

Ok Ok, so there is definitely some overlap here as I revisit a past fact, but why oh why do we call the big guy that brings us our pressies Santa Claus, Father Christmas or ye olde peoples, St Nick? Are they all the same guy travelling with different passports? Well…

Santa Claus IS St Nick, this is how:

St Nick or Saint Nicholas in English is Sint-Nicolaas in Dutch and became shortened to Sint-er-Klaas (dropping the Ni) and when brought back to English it had become Santa Claus.

Weird eh? So go round calling him “Saint ‘cholas” which is his real English name… for ya know… fun.
