Stargate Universe – SGU – Episode 1
Tonight was the first airing in the UK (Sky1) of the first two episodes of Stargate Universe (SG-U), the eagerly awaited spin-off from Stargate and Stargate Atlantis.
Set in current time it follows the adventures of a mismatched group of scientists, military and a computer gamer, through the Stargate and a billion light-years out into the Universe.
I loved Stargate and Stargate Atlantis and enjoy all ‘good’ Sci-Fi, which SGU is, however
this new series lacks the dynamic central characters that were in the previous series and as a result, the look is weak.
Robert Carlisle is an amazing talent, but I think he is playing this part in the wrong style and his character should be more of the strong arrogant type that gives viewers someone to hate from the start.
At the moment, instead of a colourful cast, there are many shades of grey which won’t be enough to make this new series as successful as the others, which I think will be a great shame.
The modern ‘film like’ editing style and amazing sets and special effect will be enough for someone like me (who wouldn’t miss an episode if the house was on fire) but I don’t think on its own it will do much to bring in new fans to the franchise, so here’s hoping that I’m totally wrong and I’ll be reviewing the 200th episode in ten years time.
